Kylian Mbappe World Cup goals: Find out the French superstar’s record

Kylian Mbappe World Cup goals tally stands at 12. The French superstar has achieved this incredible feat in only two World Cup campaigns. He became the World Champion with France at the age of 18 during the 2018 World Cup in Russia and then finished runners-up in the following tournament in Qatar in 2022.

Kylian Mbappe’s rise to prominence has been a joy to behold. Ever since he burst on to the scene with AS Monaco at the age of 16, it was apparent that he would go on to be one of the best players in the world. Mbappe is fulfilling those promises with his sensational performances for Paris Saint-Germain and the French national team on a regular basis.

He helped France win their second World Cup in his debut World Cup campaign in 2018 and also led them to the final of the World Cup in 2022. Mbappe is already the fifth highest goal-scorer in his country’s history and the signs are clear that he will only get better and better and break several more records.

First goal vs Peru | FIFA World Cup 2018 Group Stage

Kylian Mbappe who was one of the brightest young talents in world football in 2018 opened his FIFA World Cup scoring account with a goal against Peru in the group stage. France were up against Peru following a 2-1 win against Australia in their campaign opener. Mbappe scored the only goal in a tight clash and became the youngest-ever goalscorer for France at the World Cup stage at the age of 19.

Second and third goals vs Argentina | FIFA World Cup 2018 Round of 16

Having sealed their qualification to the knockout stage, France were drawn against Lionel Messi’s Argentina. The match billed as a generational battle between Messi and Mbappe saw the latter scoring the second and third goals of his World Cup career as France came out on top in a thrilling 4-3 encounter.

Mbappe constantly threatened the Argentine defence with his darting runs and pace. In fact, the first goal that France scored in the game came from a penalty that Mbappe won.

Fourth goal vs Croatia | FIFA World Cup 2018 Final

This goal was, by that point, the most important goal in Mbappe’s career. After failing to get on the scoresheet against Uruguay and Belgium in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively, Mbappe had the last laugh with a goal in the final. He scored the fourth goal against Croatia to double France’s advantage and lead them to the World Cup trophy for only the second time in their history.

Mbappe also won the FIFA Young Player Award in Russia for his important contributions and he finished the World Cup with four goals in seven matches.

Fifth goal vs Australia | FIFA World Cup 2022 Group Stage

Four years on from the World Cup-winning campaign in Russia, Kylian Mbappe picked things up from where they were left off and scored a goal in France’s first match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar against Australia. He scored the third goal for his side in a 4-1 win as France got their campaign off to a tremendous start.

Sixth and seventh goals vs Denmark | FIFA World Cup 2022 Group Stage

Before France’s group stage campaign, the ‘World Cup champions’ curse used to be predominant. However, they did away with that jinx by winning two group stage games on the trot and qualifying for the knockout rounds. Mbappe scored a brace of goals against Denmark to help his side secure a 2-1 win.

Eighth and ninth goals vs Poland | FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16

Kylian Mbappe continued to extend his dominance at the FIFA World Cup and continued his scoring spree by grabbing another brace of goals against Poland in a convincing 3-1 win in the Round of 16 stage. Having assisted Olivier Giroud in his record-breaking goal in the first half, Mbappe himself scored twice in the second half to seal a quarter-final berth.

10th, 11th and 12th goals vs Argentina | FIFA World Cup 2022 Final

18th December 2022 is a date that Kylian Mbappe will not forget easily. He scored a hat trick in a World Cup final but ended up losing against Argentina on penalties after the score remained 3-3 in extra time. Mbappe became only the second footballer to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final after England’s Geoff Hurst in 1966.

France were trailing 2-0 going into the final 10 minutes of the match when Mbappe took the game by the scruff of its neck and pulled them back into it. His first goal came from the penalty spot after Nicolas Otamendi’s foul in the box but his second goal was spectacular as he managed to send his half-volley into the net!

Lionel Messi restored Argentina’s lead in extra time but Kylian Mbappe scored from the spot once again to not only complete his hat trick and take the lead in the Golden Boot race, but also, send the match into penalties. Although Argentina ended up prevailing from the spot kicks, Mbappe ended up winning the Golden Boot as well as the Silver Ball for being the top goal-scorer and the second best player in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

With his hat trick in the World Cup final against Argentina, Mbappe also joined an exclusive club of players – Vava (1958, 1962), Pele (1958, 1970), Paul Breitner (1974, 1982) and Zinedine Zidane (1998, 2006) – who have scored in multiple World Cup finals.

Having played just two FIFA World Cups, Kylian Mbappe has already scored 12 goals in 14 appearances and he is still only 24 years of age. That number already puts him ahead of the likes of legendary French footballers Thierry Henry, who scored six goals, and Zinedine Zidane, who has five in his World Cup career.

In fact, Mbappe’s goals against Poland at the FIFA World Cup in 2022 also saw him overtake Cristiano Ronaldo on the scoring charts with eight goals. Kylian Mbappe is currently level with the legendary Brazilian footballer Pele who had also scored 12 goals in 14 matches and had won three World Cups over the course of his illustrious career.

Only five footballers in history have scored more goals than 24-year-old Mbappe at the FIFA World Cup. Just Fontaine and Lionel Messi are on 13 goals each, Gerd Muller has scored 14 goals, Brazilian Ronaldo notched 15 World Cup goals and Germany’s Miroslav Klose holds the record for the most World Cup goals in history with 16 strikes.

It is fair to say that Mbappe has plenty of time to overshadow most of the players in front of him and he could even finish his career with the most goals in World Cup history.

Incredibly, only one French player – Just Fontaine – has more World Cup goals than Mbappe. Fontaine had managed that incredible record when he scored 13 goals in a single World Cup in 1958. It continues to remain the most goals scored by a player in a single World Cup campaign and the record might stand the test of time.

However, Mbappe needs just two more goals to go past Fontaine and take the spot as the highest goal-scorer for France in World Cup history.

The record for the most international goals for France belongs to Olivier Giroud who overtook Thierry Henry’s record at the 2022 World Cup. Giroud has scored 53 goals while Henry had managed 51 over his career. Mbappe is currently fifth on the list of highest goal-scorers for France with only Michel Platini, Antoine Griezmann, Thierry Henry and Olivier Giroud ahead of him.

It goes without saying that given his age and his prolific goal-scoring nature, it is only a matter of time before he becomes the highest goal-scorer in France’s history.
