Which is the Most Successful Team in IPL History?

There have been 13 seasons of the Indian Premier League that have been completed and the 14th one is ongoing. As many as 13 teams have featured in this mega Indian T20 extravaganza in it’s 14-year history so far. However, only six teams have gone on to lift that coveted IPL trophy and also, only six teams have a win percentage of 50% of more.

Thus, here, we look back at some of the top and the most successful team in the history of the IPL.

Mumbai Indians

There is absolutely no doubt that Mumbai Indians (MI) are arguably the best side to have played in the history of the IPL. Not only in the IPL, MI are arguably one of the best T20 sides going around the world. They have won five IPL titles and all of them coming in the last eight seasons. In fact, they have been absolutely dominant and have shown the world their power and might in the T20 format.

MI’s journey in the IPL didn’t get off to the best of starts. They finished fifth in the inaugural season before a seventh-spot finish in the second season. But since the start of the 2010 season, they have been extremely consistent. They reached the final of the 2010 season but went down against Chennai Super Kings. In 2011 and 2012, they reached the playoffs but couldn’t qualify for the final. However, since 2013, a turnaround started once Rohit Sharma took over as captain. He has led them to five titles – 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Two of those were after a poor start.

Overall, MI have a win percentage of 59.04% which is the second-best in the history of the IPL. They have won a record 122 games, the most by any IPL side.

Chennai Super Kings

If there is one team that can challenge Mumbai Indians for the tag of the best IPL team in the history of the IPL, it is Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Their win percentage of 60.27% in the IPL is the best for any of the 13 sides who have taken part in the history of this Indian T20 league. They have 111 wins from 186 matches which is the second-best in the competition’s history.

The MS Dhoni-led CSK have always been a supremely consistent side right from the very first season. They have featured in 11 out the 13 seasons in the IPL and they have made it to the playoffs or the top four as many as 10 times. In fact, CSK have played eight IPL finals, once again the most for any side. They have won the title three times – 2010, 2011 and 2018. In fact, 2020 was the only year where they didn’t reach the playoffs and the sequence of 10 successive top four finishes broke.

CSK reached the final in the inaugural season in 2008 before faltering in the semi-final in 2009. In 2010 and 2011, they won the title and were they first and only team (till 2020) to defend their IPL title. In 2012, 2013 and 2015 they reached the final while they couldn’t go beyond the second Qualifier in 2014. After a two-year ban, CSK made a fairy-tale comeback in 2018 to lift the title for the third time before falling agonisingly close in the final of the IPL 2019.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Like Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) didn’t have the greatest of starts to their IPL journey. They had three successive poor seasons. They finished sixth, eighth and sixth respectively in the first three seasons of the IPL. They desperately needed a turnaround and they got that in 2011.

KKR bought Gautam Gambhir in the auctions for the 2011 IPL season and made him the captain. That was the start of a consistent run for KKR. They qualified for the playoffs and finished fourth in the 2011 season. However, they won their maiden IPL title in 2012 as they beat Chennai Super Kings in the final. They couldn’t back up the rousing performance from 2012 in 2013 as they slumped to a seventh-spot finish.

But they were back with a bang in 2014 as they won nine straight games towards the end of the season to eventually lift their second IPL title, beating Kings XI Punjab in the title-clash. In 2015, they narrowly missed out on a playoffs spot as they finished fifth before reaching the playoffs in 2016, 2017 and 2018. However, post Gambhir’s departure, KKR have made it to the playoffs only once in three seasons (2018). Their overall win percentage in the IPL has dipped a touch as well and it now stands at 51.25%. However, those two IPL titles and the consistent run between 2011-2018 makes KKR one of the most successful sides in the IPL.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) may have been around the IPL since the start of the 2013 season but they have been quite consistent for the last 5-6 years. SRH took over from Deccan Chargers in 2013 and had an impressive debut season as they reached the playoffs and finished fourth.

They couldn’t quite replicate the same in 2014 and 2015 as they finished sixth in both the seasons. However, 2016 was the start of a consistent run for SRH. They went on to lift the title in 2016. The David Warner-led side finished third in the league stages and then won three games in the playoffs, including the final. SRH are the only team to finish outside the top-two and lift the IPL title ever since the playoffs came into picture in 2011.

They back that 2016 performance up with consistent runs in the following seasons as well. They reached the playoffs in each of the next four seasons, making it five in a row. In 2017 and 2019, they crashed out after losing the Eliminator but in 2018, they topped the league stages and reached the final as well. In 2020, they lost the second Qualifier. Thus, overall, SRH are third in terms of the best winning percentage in the IPL – 51.9%.

Conclusion

The likes of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC), Punjab Kings (PBKS) are yet to win an IPL trophy but have a good chance when the IPL resumes in September. Which team do you think has a chance to win the IPL in 2021?
