Arshdeep Singh Biography and Career

Arshdeep Singh is an Indian cricketer who plays for Punjab in the domestic circuit and Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League. His international debut came in 2022 but he was destined for greater things right from a young age.

Arshdeep got into the limelight first in 2018 when he was part of the Indian side that won the Under-19 World Cup. He played just two games but immediately struck as someone who had what it took to make it big early. With speeds in excess of 140 kmph even at a young age, the ability to deliver yorkers at will and the left-arm angle, Arshdeep has been the full package. But having the skills is one thing and translating them into performances is a completely different kettle of fish. But Arshdeep has done that with ease and is quickly becoming a mainstay in the Indian T20I side.

Among other achievements, Arshdeep’s biggest role was when he helped India win the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title after 17 long years.

Born in Madhya Pradesh, Arshdeep moved to Punjab at a young age with his family. His mother used to take him to the ground on a bicycle 13 kilometres away from their house and wait there till his practice got over. He made his first class debut for Punjab in 2019, while his List A debut came earlier in 2018. Impressed by his domestic performances, the selectors picked him for the Under 19 India World Cup squad and he came up trumps. A key moment in his career was being picked by Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) ahead of the 2019 auction for his base price of Rs 20 lakh.

Arshdeep made his T20I debut against England in 2022 and made his ODI debut against New Zealand a few months later. He took seven wickets in five matches in an away series against West Indies where he won the player of the match award. He was selected for the 2022 Asia Cup squad where he had a good campaign despite a forgettable series for India. He was then picked for the 2022 T20 World Cup where in the first game in front of a packed MCG ground, he dismissed Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan in a searing opening spell. He finished the tournament as India’s leading wicket-taker.

Arshdeep was picked in the Indian playing XI ahead of Mohammed Siraj at the T20 World Cup 2024 and he repaid the captain’s faith by finishing the tournament as the joint-highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets. Arshdeep played a key role in helping India win the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. He won the ICC’s T20 Cricketer of the Year award in 2025.

Arshdeep has had a problem with the no-balls in the past and has cost India matches, but if he can fix that he will be an absolute asset for India in years to come across all three formats.

Arshdeep Singh in the IPL

Arshdeep was picked by Kings XI Punjab at the 2019 player auction and has stayed with the team since. He played just three matches in his debut season in 2019 and picked nine wickets in eight games in 2020. But Punjab retained him and he did much better in 2021 where he picked 18 wickets in 12 outings which included a career-best 5 for 37 against Rajasthan Royals. He quickly became the team’s go-to death bowler, nailing the yorkers at will. All of the IPL games for Arshdeep have been for the Punjab franchise and he is the face of the team.

Despite playing for Punjab only since 2019, he is already second on their all-time list of wicket-takers and he is on his way to move right to the top after being picked by Punjab again in the 2025 IPL auction.

Beyond cricket

Arshdeep has in quick time become one of the faces of the Indian T20 side. He has also garnered a lot of fan following across the world. On Instagram, Arshdeep has amassed more than 2 million followers. He also endorses a number of top brands such as My11Circle, My Fitness, ASICS India, and Chandigarh University.

In 2022, Arshdeep was a victim of communal trolling by a section of the fans, when he dropped a catch during a crucial juncture against Pakistan. A lot of the current and ex-cricketers took a stand for Arshdeep at the time.
