Yashasvi Jaiswal is an Indian cricketer who plays for Mumbai in the domestic circuit and Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. He shot into the limelight after being the youngest cricketer in the world to score a List A double-century. But it is the story behind his reaching the top that really defines Jaiswal as a person and cricketer.
Jaiswal was born on 28 December 2001 in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh and had an inclination towards cricket right from a young age. However, opportunities in his hometown were limited, so he moved to Mumbai at his uncle’s place in Worli. But the house was small and he was also not treated well, so he moved out.
Jaiswal was then given accommodation in a dairy shop close to the famous Azad Maidan on one condition that he would help the owner, but Jaiswal hardly got any time after his cricket practice and was soon evicted from the shop. At the tender age of 12 or 13, Jaiswal was out on the street again with a bag and a bat in hand. He moved into one of the tents in Azad Maidan where he lived alongside the groundsman and sold panipuri in his free time to earn a living.
But, in a city like Mumbai where thousands of children come to Azad Maidan to become cricketers, Jaiswal did not know his next step. Then came a guiding light into his life - Jwala Singh who was a coach in the Mumbai circles. He was blown away by Jaiswal’s potential and was so impressed by what he saw that he gave him a place to stay and decided to coach him for free. Singh basically took Jaiswal under his wing.
Thus began the incredible one of a kind rags to riches story on Jaiswal. It did not take the youngster long to make his presence felt in the Mumbai state team. His first tryst with stardom was when Jaiswal scored 319 and picked 13/99 in a Giles Shield match, a record in school cricket. He was picked for the Mumbai Under-16 team and then the India Under-19 team. Jaiswal played in the Under-19 World Cup in 2020 and was the leading run-scorer in the tournament. He was also named player of the tournament as India entered the final.
Jaiswal soon amassed runs in the domestic first class and List A circuit. In 2019, when he was just 17 years and 292 days, Jaiswal smoked an emphatic 203 in 154 balls against Jharkhand. In his first full Ranji Trophy season of 2021-22, Jaiswal smashed three centuries on the bounce as Mumbai made it to the final.
Jaiswal soon made it to the IPL, picked for a mammoth Rs 2.4 crore by Rajasthan Royals. It opened avenues for Jaiswal he wouldn’t have ever imagined.
Royals spotted Jaiswal early and nurtured him into the cricketer he is today. He did not have the best of seasons in 2020, 2021 and 2022 but finished as Royals’ highest run-scorer in 2023 with 625 runs in 14 matches. He scored his maiden IPL century the same year and also smashed the fastest IPL half-century of all time, off 13 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders. Jaiswal is very early into his career but is one of the few batsmen to score multiple IPL centuries.
Jaiswal made his Test debut against West Indies in June 2023 and scored a fantastic 171 on debut, for which he won the player of the match award. He soon made his T20I debut as well and was part of the India squad that lifted the 2024 T20 World Cup in 2024.
Jaiswal is now an integral part of the Indian Test and white-ball sides and is also touted as the next captain in franchise cricket.
Jaiswal is regarded as the next big thing to come out of Indian cricket and already has plenty of former and current cricketers raving about him. He has a decent social media presence. On X (formerly Twitter), Jaiswal has close to 150,000 followers while on Instagram, he has 4.3 million followers.
Due to his rapid rise in international and franchise cricket, Jaiswal has also endorsed a number of brands such as BoAt, Boost, Firebolt and JBL India.
Jaiswal also has had his brushes with controversy. In a Duleep Trophy game in 2022, he was sent off the field by Ajinkya Rahane, his captain as he was constantly sledging South Zone player Ravi Teja. The video quickly went viral across social media.
Jaiswal won the Ceat Men’s cricketer of the year award after his stellar performance in the longest format of the game in 2024.
