Former international cricketer Shakib Al Hasan is one of the finest players ever to have emerged from Bangladesh. Among the best all-rounders in the world, Shakib Al Hasan is a left-handed batter and a slow arm orthodox bowler. Although he announced retirement from T20Is and Tests in 2024, Shakib hasn't officially announced retirement from ODI as of March 2025.
Born in Magura, Khulna, Shakib began playing cricket at an early age and trained at a government-run sports institute. By 2023 he had already made his U-17 debut in the ACC Cup, where he registered 3–18 in 8 overs. His tryst with Bangladesh began at the u19 level in 2015. That same year, he made his first-class debut for Bangladesh Cricket Board President's XI.
His rice through the ranks was very quick, and by 2016, he had already made his international debut for Bangladesh in ODIs. Against Zimbabwe in Harare, Shakib scored 30 runs and picked up a wicket on his ODI debut. This is a format in which he went on to become one of the greatest all-rounders in the world. That same here, he made his T20 International debut before making his Test debut in 2007. He took little to no time to establish himself as one of the best all-rounders in all three formats of the game.
From January 2009 to April 2011 and then again from March 2012 to January 2013 Shakib took up the top spot in the ICC ODI all-rounder rankings. In 2011 he became the world's top ranked Test all-rounder and by 2014, he had also become the world's top ranked T20 all-rounder.
In June 2009, Shakib was appointed the vice-captain of Bangladesh. But an injury to regular captain Mashrafe Mortaza opened the doors for Shakib to captain the team. He was only 22 years old at the time. Under his captaincy, Bangladesh secured the first ever overseas series win, and Shakib was made the permanent captain of the team.
Overall, he let Bangladesh in 19 test matches, including 4 wins and 15 losses. In the 50 over format, Bangladesh won 17 matches of the 62 in which Shakib was at the helm of the team. In the shortest format, he led Bangladesh to 16 wins and 23 losses.
Shakib has also played in nearly every T20 franchise league in the world, including the Bangladesh Premier League, the Indian Premier League, the Pakistan Super League, the Caribbean Premier League, and the Big Bash League among others. Shakib is the highest wicket taker in the history of BPL.
It can also be noted that the all-rounder was one of the highest-paid players in all of these T20 franchise tournaments. In the 2011 Indian Premier League, he was signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders for $425000. Shakib finished as the team's third highest wicket taker that season. The next season, in one of the games, he registered figures of three for 17, which still remains one of his best bowling figures in the shortest format. He also played a crucial role in KKR winning their second IPL trophy in 2014. Not only did he score 227 runs at a strike rate of nearly 150, but he also pick up 11 wickets at an economy of under 7.
Ahead of IPL 2018, he was let go by KKR and was picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad. That season, he became only the second T20 player ever to reach 300 wickets and 4000 runs. In 2021 he was once again bought back by KKR for over Rs 3 crore. In 2023, he withdrew himself from the tournament due to his commitments with the Bangladesh team.
Shakib married Bangladeshi American, Umme Ahmed Shishir, in 2012. According to various reports the two match in 2010 when Shakib was playing County cricket in England. In 2015 the couple welcomed their first daughter, before welcoming their second daughter in 2020 and their first son in 2021.
Beyond the 22 yards, Shakib was the goodwill ambassador for UNICEF Bangladesh. He also runs a charity organisation named Shakib Al Hasan foundation. In 2023, the cricketer joined politics and subsequently stood in the 2024 Bangladesh general elections and also secured a win. But in 2024, his tenure as a Member of Parliament came to an end.
Shakib is one of the richest cricketers in Bangladesh. According to publicly available data, his net worth is close to a colossal rupees 600 crore in 2025. Being one of the greatest all-rounders in the world, Shakib has been one of the most sought-after players for brand endorsements.
