About
The United States men's national cricket team represents the U.S. in international cricket and is currently governed by USA Cricket, which became an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in January 2019. The team has a historic legacy, having participated in the first-ever international cricket match against Canada in 1844. However, for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, the team primarily competed in bilateral contests such as the annual Auty Cup against Canada. The United States made its formal international tournament debut at the 1979 ICC Trophy and has remained a consistent participant in World Cup qualification tournaments, missing only two editions since its debut.
After winning the 2004 ICC Six Nations Challenge, the U.S. qualified for the ICC Champions Trophy that same year, marking its entry into One Day International (ODI) cricket. In 2018, the ICC granted full T20I status to all its members, enabling the U.S. to play official T20 Internationals from January 2019 onwards. The team's first T20I was scheduled against the UAE in March 2019. That same year, the U.S. earned a place in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 following a fourth-place finish in the World Cricket League Division Two tournament. This secured them regular ODI fixtures, starting with a home tri-series in September 2019 against Papua New Guinea and Namibia. With an evolving domestic structure and ICC backing, the USA Cricket Team is now positioned to grow as a competitive force in associate cricket.
USA Cricket Team History
Cricket in the United States has a long and storied history dating back to the early 18th century, when the sport was widely played throughout the Thirteen Colonies during the British colonial period. Anecdotal evidence even suggests that American founding fathers like George Washington and John Adams were familiar with the sport, Washington reportedly played a game of wicket with his troops at Valley Forge, while Adams drew parallels between cricket clubs and national governance. The U.S. made history by participating in the first international cricket match against Canada in 1844 at Bloomingdale Park in New York. This event, witnessed by 20,000 spectators, marked the beginning of the world's longest-running international sporting rivalry. Despite its early popularity, however, cricket’s growth was soon eclipsed by baseball in the mid-19th century, particularly due to baseball’s more accessible equipment and simpler rules.
Even as cricket’s popularity declined nationally, regions like Philadelphia continued to support the sport through the Philadelphian cricket team, which played first-class cricket from 1878 to 1913. During this period, international teams from England also toured North America, playing commercial matches, often against local sides with numerical advantages to level the competition. While cricket gradually faded from the American mainstream, the U.S. returned to the international cricketing stage in the late 20th century. Their participation in the ICC Trophy began in 1979, and the U.S. achieved its best result in 2001 with a sixth-place finish. They also claimed victory in the 2002 ICC Americas Championship, showcasing their potential among the associate nations.
A major breakthrough came in 2004 when the United States played its first-ever One Day International (ODI) matches after winning the ICC Six Nations Challenge. In a tightly contested tournament, the U.S. edged out other teams like Scotland and Namibia on net run rate to qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy in England. This led to their ODI debut against New Zealand at The Oval on September 10, 2004. That same year, they also took part in the ICC Intercontinental Cup, playing first-class matches against Canada and Bermuda. While these milestones marked a resurgence in American cricket, governance and structural issues plagued its progress until USA Cricket was officially recognized by the ICC in 2019, ushering in a new era for the sport in the country.
