Wanindu Hasaranga
Currently one of the best all-rounders in the world, Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga is the best T20 bowler as well, as per the ICC T20 rankings. An aggressive legbreak bowler, Wanindu Hasaranga impressed in Sri Lanka’s 2015 and 2016 Under-19 teams, before eventually making it to the national team. Hasaranga made his T20 international debut in 2019 against New Zealand. So far, Hasaranga has played 52 T20 internationals for Sri Lanka, from which he has taken 86 wickets at an average of 14.48 and strike rate of 13.0. Hasaranga has particularly been impressive over the last two years.
He stole the show at the T20 World Cup 2021 with 16 wickets in eight matches. He also jointly holds the record of most T20 Internationals dismissals in a single calendar year. Hasaranga and South Africa’s Tabraiz Shamsi picked 36 wickets in 2021, but Hasaranga amassed those wickets in 20 matches, two fewer than Shamsi. In addition to that, he holds the record for picking the most wickets in a single edition of the T20 World Cup – 16 wickets in eight games in the 2021 edition – to break the record of Ajantha Mendis, who took 15 wickets in 2012 T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka.
Rashid Khan
Unarguably the best cricketer to have emerged from Afghanistan, and one of the best spin bowlers in the world, Rashid Khan is the second-ranked bowler in the ICC T20 bowlers ranking. The legbreak googly bowler made his T20 debut in 2015 against Zimbabwe, and took little time to establish himself as one of the best spin bowlers in the world. So far, Rashid has played 74 T20Is, from which he has 122 wickets at an average of 14.37 and a strike rate of 13.7.
The young bowler has been Afghanistan’s main player for the last few years. Last year, he became the quickest bowler to reach 400 wickets in competitive T20s. He reached the milestone in his 289th T0 match by dismissing New Zealand opener Martin Guptill. He also holds the record for the most T20I scalps in a calendar year – he picked up 96 wickets in 2018. Not just with the ball, Rashid has delivered with the bat too, and can play the role of a finisher. He has finished quite a few games in other T20s – including the IPL – where he has a batting strike rate of over 145.
Adil Rashid
The third best bowler in the world in T20 internationals is England’s Adil Rashid. The leg break bowler, famous for his googly, has picked up 93 wickets in 92 T20Is since making his debut in June 2009. Rashid, however, has done even better in the longest format of the game, in which he has 60 wickets from just 19 matches.
In other T20s too, Adil Rashid has been impressive. He has appeared in 248 T20s, from which he has taken 275 wickets. He has played in leagues like the Indian Premier League and Big Bash League.
Josh Hazlewood
The fourth best T20 bowler in the world currently is Josh Hazelwood. The right arm fast medium bowler has picked up 58 wickets in 41 T20 internationals at an average of 20.36. Hazlewood made his T20i debut in 2013 and went on to become one of Australia’s frontline pacers.
Sam Curran
Left arm medium fast bowler Sam Curran is the fifth best T20 bowler in the world right now, as per the ICC rankings. Curran made his T20I debut against England in Christchurch in 2019. It was not an ideal debut for Curran, as he finished his four overs at an economy rate of 33. Curran, however, picked up a wicket in his debut match.
So far, the pacer has represented the England team in 35 T20 internationals, from which he has picked up 41 wickets at an average of 21.75. Curran is also a handy batsman down the order. In T20 internationals, he has a batting strike rate of over 130, and in other T20s, he has a batting strike rate of over 135.
