Highest runs in IPL in one season: Top 5 list

Former India and Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli holds the record for scoring the highest runs in IPL in one season. He had made 973 runs for his team across 16 matches in IPL 2016.

Jos Buttler had a remarkable year for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2022. The dynamic English batter, who opened the innings for the inaugural champions, seemed to be at the peak of his powers and bowling units felt clueless against him. He ended up slamming 863 runs in a single IPL season with the help of four centuries. Although it seemed like he would comfortably break the record of the most runs in a single season of the Indian Premier League, that didn’t ultimately prove to be the case as he fell short.

It’s no surprise to see some of the biggest names in world cricket on the list of players with the highest number of runs in a single season of the IPL. After all, the riches and the growth of the IPL as a brand took place on the basis of the firepower provided by outrageous batting performances.

Batsmen like Chris Gayle, David Warner, and Virat Kohli have taken the league to the next level with their consistent dominance with the bat and have left an immense impact in IPL history. Several of these players have also donned the IPL orange cap proudly on multiple occasions.

Without further ado, let’s discuss the players to have scored the highest runs in an IPL season:

Virat Kohli – 973 runs, IPL 2016

The former captain of the Indian team, Virat Kohli holds the record for scoring the most runs in one IPL season. He ended up channeling his ‘King Kohli’ mode in 2016 and was almost unstoppable. He scored 973 runs across 16 matches of IPL in 2016, which remains a record to this date.

Kohli’s accomplishment actually seems to be one of the most difficult records to break in IPL cricket. He scored a record four centuries that season, before Jos Buttler eventually equalled him in 2022.

He scored runs at a jaw-dropping average of 81.08 and also had a strike rate of 152.03. The 33-year-old also collected seven half-centuries throughout the season and some of his centuries in 2016 rank among the greatest knocks in IPL history.

However, much to Kohli’s disappointment, despite having perhaps the greatest individual season by a batter in IPL history, his team, Royal Challengers Bangalore failed to win the trophy that season.

Shubman Gill – 890 runs, IPL 2023

During the IPL 2023 season, Shubman Gill became the second Indian and fourth overall player to surpass the 800-run mark. He accomplished this feat during the Qualifier 2 match against Mumbai Indians. Gill also scored his third IPL century of the season, making him only the second Indian, after Kohli, to achieve three or more centuries in a single IPL season. Furthermore, Gill surpassed Jos Buttler’s run tally of 863 runs from 2022, becoming the second-highest run-scorer behind Kohli during the IPL 2023 final against Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad. Despite being dismissed for 39 runs in the final, Gill concluded his campaign with a total of 890 runs.

Jos Buttler – 863 runs, IPL 2022

Jos Buttler became the talk of the town after his run of sensational performances with Rajasthan Royals this season. He is now high on the list of top scorers in a single season after amassing 863 runs across 17 matches in 2022.

Buttler was in breathtaking form almost throughout the tournament, and much like Kohli, he also ended up scoring four centuries and tying his record for a single season. The similarities with Kohli don’t just end there.

Despite playing a starring role throughout IPL 2022 and scoring runs at an average of 57.53 and at a strike rate of 149.05, Buttler also had to face disappointment as his team lost the final match against Gujarat Titans and failed to lift the trophy.

David Warner – 848 runs, IPL 2016

Former Sunrisers Hyderabad captain and current Delhi Capitals player David Warner is arguably the greatest overseas batter to grace the Indian Premier League. He has been one of the most successful batsmen in the league and has won the much coveted Orange Cap on a record three occasions.

His most productive season in the Indian Premier League arrived in 2016. Had it not been for Kohli’s all-time great season, Warner would’ve finished on top of the scoring charts and pocketed another Orange Cap in 2016.

He slammed a record nine half-centuries that season – the highest over a single season in the league’s history and ended up scoring 848 runs. Unlike Kohli and Buttler, Warner failed to score a century that season but he had an incredible average of 60.57 and a strike rate of 151.42.

Also unlike Kohli and Buttler, Warner won the league that season after helping Sunrisers Hyderabad defeat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final.

Kane Williamson – 735 runs, IPL 2018

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Kane Williamson played breathtaking cricket throughout IPL 2018. Appointed captain in the wake of the Sandpaper incident which saw Warner getting suspended from international cricket for a lengthy period, the Kiwi captain put the team on his shoulders and carried them to the final.

Williamson made 735 runs in 17 matches throughout the season and his highest score was 84. He also scored an unbelievable eight half-centuries and comfortably won the Orange Cap for that season. Despite being viewed as an anchor batter, Williamson also batted at a wonderful strike rate of over 142 that season.
