The player who helped England win its very first ICC World Cup in 2019, under his captaincy, Eoin Morgan, needs no introduction. The Irish-born English cricketer is a left-handed batsman who has had huge contributions to teams he has played for in his career. Morgan has also impressively played for Ireland in the early stages of his career and represented Ireland’s under-17 and under-19 teams. Having played for both Ireland and England (now), Morgan is the first player to have scored ODI centuries for two different countries.
Morgan, who made his ODI debut on 5-August-2006 for Ireland against Scotland, scored 99 runs in his debut series only. However, soon after, on 7-February-2007, Morgan scored his first ODI century against Canada, thereby becoming the youngest non-sub continental cricketer to score a century in ODI cricket.
Having had the unapologetic desire to play for England since a very young age, Morgan finally was named as one of the twelfth men of England cricket team, in May 2007, for the Lord’s Test against West Indies. He subsequently played for England Lions in a List A match against South Africa on 16 August 2008, where he scored 47* in the partnership of 113 with Samit Patel. After playing for the England Lions, Morgan was announced to be a part of England’s 30-man provisional squad for the 2009 ICC World Twenty20, which implied that he could not play for Ireland.
As far as his journey in IPL (Indian Premier League) is concerned, Morgan made his debut in 2010 as a part of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). However, in the 2011 IPL auctions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) purchased the right-arm medium bowler for the next three years. After subsequently playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (2015-2016)and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) (2017), Morgan was again picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2020 IPL auctions. This time KKR bought Morgan at INR 5.25 crores and was also appointed as the Team Captain. In the 2021 IPL as well, Morgan will be leading the KKR team.
