Who has hit the most sixes in T20 World Cup history?

West Indies legend Chris Gayle holds the record for the most sixes in T20 World Cup history and has smacked 63 sixes. Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza has hit the most sixes in T20 World Cup 2022, racking up 11 sixes in the tournament and scoring 219 runs at a strike rate of 147.97.

The importance of a six can hardly be overstated. It gets the crowd off its feet, puts pressure on the bowling team and most importantly, fetches plenty of runs off just one blow. While sixes are always precious in any format of the game and are some of the most coveted moments, it is especially true in the shortest format of the sport where there’s an increased need to score quick runs.

Here we will talk about the players who have scored the most sixes in T20 World Cup history. It goes without saying that many of these players have also been some of the most successful ones in the history of this competition and T20 cricket in general.

Chris Gayle (West Indies) | 63 sixes

Chris Gayle is rightly called the king of T20 cricket and no batsman in history has hit as many sixes as he in the history of the T20 World Cup. The ‘Universe Boss’ has smacked 63 sixes in 33 matches over the course of seven tournaments between 2007 and 2021.

The most astounding part about his greatness is that Gayle has hit almost double the sixes as the batter in second place! He is also a two-time T20 World Cup winner in 2012 and 2016 and is the third-highest run-scorer in World Cup history with 965 runs at a strike rate of 142.75.

Gayle also holds the record for the fastest century in T20 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma (India) | 35 sixes

Indian captain Rohit Sharma is second on the list of players with the most sixes and has smacked 35 maximums in 39 matches. Rohit is also the fourth-highest scorer in T20 World Cup history with just two runs less than Gayle. He was part of the Indian squad that won the inaugural World T20 tournament in South Africa in 2007.

Rohit endured a difficult campaign during the latest edition of the World Cup in Australia. He was able to make just 116 runs in six matches at an average of less than 20. The Indian team also bowed out of the semi-finals against England.

Jos Buttler (England) | 33 sixes

Captain of the England team that won the 2022 T20 World Cup, Jos Buttler is the joint third-highest six hitter in T20 World Cup history and has 33 maximums to his name. Buttler has played 27 matches since 2012 and he has also scored 799 runs at an average of 42.05 and a strike rate of 144.48.

Buttler was remarkable during the latest edition of the World Cup as well and finished as the fourth-highest run-scorer with 225 runs at an average of 45 and a strike rate of 144.23. He hit seven sixes in Australia.

Yuvraj Singh (India) | 33 sixes

Indian stalwart Yuvraj Singh, who famously hit six sixes off England’s Stuart Broad in the 2007 T20 World Cup, is also joint third and has smacked 33 sixes in T20 World Cup history. Yuvraj was obviously a crucial member of the winning Indian team during the very first T20 World Cup held in South Africa. He played 31 matches between 2007 and 2016 and collected 593 runs.

Yuvraj also holds the record for scoring the Fastest 50 in T20 World Cup.

Shane Watson (Australia) | 31 sixes

Shane Watson is joint fourth along with his Australian compatriot David Warner. Watson has played the least number of matches among players in the top 10 list and has appeared in only 24 games between 2007 and 2016. Mr. 360 degrees is one of the greatest players in the history of the T20 World Cup. His batting has always been flamboyant, effective, and ruthlessly entertaining. De Villiers has hit 30 sixes in T20 World Cups between 2007 and 2016 and he has played 30 matches. The South African maverick batter has also scored 717 runs at a high strike rate of 143.40 and also has an average close to 30.

Virat Kohli (India) | 28 sixes

Virat Kohli is the highest run-scorer in the history of the T20 World Cup. He recently overtook Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene and finished at the top with 1141 runs at an unbelievable average of 81.50 and at a strike rate of over 131. Kohli has also played only 27 matches since the 2012 T20 World Cup and he has already racked up 14 half-centuries while no one else has managed more than 10.

Kohli is eighth on the list of the players with the most sixes with 28 blows but he is second on the list of the players with the most boundaries. The former Indian captain has hit 103 fours. He has also finished as the leading run-scorer in a T20 World Cup twice, in 2014 and now in 2022. He amassed 296 runs across six matches in Australia. Despite his superlative numbers, Kohli has never managed to win the T20 World Cup.

Dwayne Bravo (West Indies) | 25 sixes

Flamboyant West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo can also knock balls out of the park seamlessly. He is joint ninth with 25 sixes in T20 World Cup history and has played 34 matches between 2007 and 2021. Just like Chris Gayle, Bravo has also won the T20 World Cup twice in 2012 and 2016.
