Suryakumar Yadav is mostly known for his stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders where he was part of their title-winning campaign in 2014. However, not many are aware of the fact that Surya was with the Mumbai Indians before that and made his IPL debut in the 2012 season. The dynamic batter had then got only one game to play against the Pune Warriors and he ended up bagging a four-ball duck. Surya didn’t play a single game in IPL 2013 season.
Ahead of the IPL 2014, Kolkata Knight Riders secured Suryakumar Yadav for an IPL salary for an amount of INR 70 lakh. The team led by Gautam Gambhir trusted him to play the finisher’s role and the Mumbai lad didn’t disappoint. He performed the role to perfection smashing 164 runs in 10 innings, facing 117 balls, at a strike rate of 140.17. Surya remained unbeaten on five occasions and managed to hit 16 fours and five sixes.

Consequently, the team couldn’t defend the title and bowed out of the tournament earlier than expected.

In IPL 2018, Surya was the top run-getter for MI and was also in the race to win the Orange Cap. He managed to amass 512 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 133.33. He smashed 61 fours and 16 sixes in the season and scored runs at an average of 36.57. Unfortunately, MI couldn’t make it to the playoffs and the juggernaut of Surya stopped in the league stages itself.
Suryakumar Yadav continued his brilliant run of form for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2019. He amassed 424 runs in 15 innings at an average of 32.61 and a strike rate of 130.86. He was one of the reasons why Mumbai Indians managed to win their fourth IPL title beating Chennai Super Kings in a last-ball thrilling final.
IPL 2020 was a pretty different one with COVID-19 around and the matches were played behind closed doors. Suryakumar Yadav was the second highest run-scorer for the eventual champions amassing 480 runs in 15 innings at an average of 40 at a strike rate of 145.01 hitting 61 fours and 11 sixes.

Thanks to his exceptional performances in the earlier seasons, Mumbai Indians decided to retain him for an IPL salary of INR 8 crore.
