Ayush Mhatre is a rising Indian cricketer known for his aggressive yet composed style at the top of the order. Born on July 16, 2007, in Mumbai, Mhatre is a right-handed opening batter who has quickly risen through the ranks of Indian domestic cricket to make a name for himself across formats.
Mhatre burst onto the scene with his performances in the India Under-19 setup, including three appearances in the 2024 Asia Cup. However, it was his entry into the first-class arena that truly showcased his potential. At just 17 years of age, he made his debut for Mumbai in the prestigious 2024–25 Irani Cup and followed it up with a remarkable 176-run knock against Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy, a performance that turned heads across the domestic circuit.
In just nine first-class matches, Mhatre has already notched up 504 runs, including two centuries, at an average of 31.50. His List A numbers are even more eye-catching: 458 runs in seven innings at an average of 65.42 and a blistering strike rate of 135.50. Notably, he etched his name into the record books by becoming the youngest player in men’s senior List A history to score 150+ runs in an innings, surpassing Yashasvi Jaiswal’s previous record.
The prodigious talent was rewarded with an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract in 2025 when Chennai Super Kings signed him for INR 30 lakhs as a replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad. On April 20, 2025, Mhatre made his IPL debut against Mumbai Indians, scoring a quickfire 32 off just 15 balls. He further cemented his potential with a dazzling 94 off 48 balls in a high-pressure chase against Royal Challengers Bangalore, narrowly missing out on a maiden IPL century.
At 17 years and 278 days, Mhatre became the seventh-youngest player to appear in an IPL match. Sharing the dressing room with legends like MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin, Mhatre finds himself in an ideal environment to learn, evolve, and shape a bright future in Indian cricket.
With his flair, maturity beyond his years, and hunger for runs, Ayush Mhatre stands out as one of the most exciting young batting prospects in the country.
Ayush Mhatre was born into a Samvedi Brahmin family that speaks Marathi, originally from Walunje in Maharashtra. He was raised in Nallasopara, a neighborhood in the city of Virar, Maharashtra. His journey with cricket began at the young age of six, but it wasn't until he turned 15 that he started seriously considering it as a professional career. In pursuit of his dream, Mhatre undertook a daily commute of nearly 80 kilometers each way by train, traveling from Virar to Churchgate, right beside the iconic Wankhede Stadium to train and immerse himself in the sport.
