Ishan Kishan was born on July 18, 1998, in Patna, Bihar. Due to registration issues between the Bihar Cricket Association and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Ishan began playing for Jharkhand, a neighbouring state.
Kishan’s foray into top-level cricket sometimes drew comparisons to another legendary wicketkeeper-batter from Jharkhand—MS Dhoni. Both hail from the same state-level team, both are fearless behind the stumps, and both have a reputation for finishing games with explosive hitting. But the younger wicketkeeper batter is yet to make a big name for himself in international cricket.
A 16-year-old Kishan made his first-class debut for Jharkhand in 2014, and took little time to cement his place in the squad. The southpaw scored a century and five fifties in his first ten first-class matches.
Kishan's breakthrough moment came in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy when he smashed a mammoth 273 against Delhi. He eventually also earned captaincy of India's squad for the 2016 U-19 World Cup, leading the team to a runners-up finish.
However, it was Indian Premier League (IPL) which proved to be Kishan’s launchpad to stardom. The Gujarat Lions picked him up in 2016, but it was with Mumbai Indians that he truly flourished. Bought for Rs 6.2 crore in 2018, Kishan showed glimpses of his potential in his first few IPL seasons. He was part of the Mumbai team which won back-to-back IPL titles in 2019 and 2020.
It was the IPL 2020 which earned Kishan widespread acclaim. He finished as MI’s top run-scorer with 516 runs in 14 matches, including a blistering 99 against Royal Challengers Bangalore. His fearless stroke play made him one of the most talked-about young talents.
Mumbai Indians reaffirmed their faith in him, making him their most expensive buy at the 2022 auction for Rs 15.25 crore. The subsequent seasons saw Kishan have his share of ups and downs, before he was released by the franchise ahead of IPL 2025, and bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 11.25 crore.
Kishan’s IPL heroics soon translated into an India call-up. He made his T20I debut against England in March 2021 and announced himself with a 56-run knock off just 32 balls. Later that year, he made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka, scoring 59 off 42 balls. This was the second-fastest ODI fifty by a debutant.
But his most defining moment in international cricket came in December 2022. Playing against Bangladesh, Kishan blasted 210 off just 131 balls—the fastest double century in ODI history. Not only did he become the youngest batter to score a double ton in ODIs, but he also converted his maiden ODI century straight into a double—something no one had done before.
Kishan is still evolving. He made his Test debut against the West Indies in 2023.
Beyond cricket
In less than a decade since becoming a part of the IPL, Ishan Kishan has amassed an impressive fortune for himself. In 2025, the cricketer's net worth is estimated to be around Rs 66 crore. Kishan was the most expensive Indian player sold in the 2022 auction after the Mumbai Indians splurged Rs 15.25 crore to retain him.
Besides earning money from IPL and BCCI contracts, and match fees, Kishan also derives significant money from brand endorsement. He is associated with brands like Manyavar, CEAT, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and Oppo among others.
