Right-handed top-order batsman Rahul Tripathi is one of the many cricketers in India who found fame after impressing in the Indian Premier League. Born on March 2, 1991, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, Rahul hails from a family with a rich military and sports heritage. His father, Colonel Ajay Tripathi, not only served in the Indian Army but also played cricket at the under-22 level for Uttar Pradesh back in the early '80s. His mother, Saroj Tripathi, is a homemaker, and his sister, Rupali, has represented Maharashtra in basketball.
Growing up in a military family meant that Rahul moved around quite a bit all over India, which shaped his early life. He developed a passion for cricket at a young age but only began formal training at nine when his family settled in Lucknow. However, his training hit a pause when his father was assigned to Srinagar during Operation Parakram. In 2003, the family relocated to Pune, where Rahul picked up his cricket training again at Deccan Gymkhana, one of the oldest cricket clubs in the city. With the help of coaches Kedar Joglekar and Hemant Athalye, he sharpened his skills and caught the attention of local cricket clubs, notably with three consecutive centuries at the under-19 level.
In 2014, Rahul was awarded the BCCI award for Best U-25 Cricketer in 2014. Not just to cricket, he was dedicated to studies too, and completed his Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Sri Parashurambhau Mahavidyalay.
Rahul made his debut in domestic cricket for Maharashtra in 2012. Over the years, he became a mainstay in the team's batting lineup. In the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy season, he was Maharashtra's leading run-scorer with 504 runs in eight matches.
But it was the IPL which truly brought him into the limelight. In 2017, he was signed by Rising Pune Supergiant. In his debut season, he made an immediate impact by scoring 391 runs at a strike rate of 146.44, including a highest score of 93.
In 2018, he was acquired by Rajasthan Royals, where he had a notable innings of 80 runs off 40 balls. He later played for Kolkata Knight Riders from 2020–2021, and the Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2022–2024. Rahul was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 8.50 crore and repaid the faith by amassing over 400 runs in IPL 2022. He was later bought by Chennai Super Kings in the 2025 IPL auction for Rs 3.4 crore.
As of 2025, Rahul has played 95 IPL matches, scoring 2,236 runs at an average of 27.27, with 12 half-centuries and a highest score of 93.
Rahul's consistent performances in domestic cricket and the IPL earned him a call-up to the Indian national team. The first time he donned the India jersey was in January 2025, in a T20 international against Sri Lanka at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. At the age of 31, he became the third-oldest player to debut for India in T20 Internationals, after Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. Although he made a few notable contributions in his debut series, Rahul was not able to make a permanent place for himself in the team as the senior players returned.
As of 2025, Rahul Tripathi's estimated net worth is around Rs 27 crore. His major sources of income include his IPL contracts, BCCI salaries, and brand endorsements. Tripathi's IPL journey began in 2017 with Rising Pune Supergiant. He later played for Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. In 2025, he joined Chennai Super Kings. Apart from cricket, he owns a luxurious house in Pune and has invested in real estate across India.
