1) Pat Cummins – 14 balls vs Mumbai Indians, MCA, Pune (2022)

It took the Indian Premier League four long years before another batsman managed to attain KL Rahul’s record. However, it came in the most dramatic of fashions as Australian all-rounder Pat Cummins took five-time IPL winners Mumbai Indians to the stands with a blistering knock.

Cummins had come to bat in the 14th over when KKR were struggling at 101-5 while chasing a target of 162 runs. And while Venkatesh Iyer stood solid at one end, Cummins was expected to show nerves as this was his first match in IPL 2022. However, the Aussi hit four boundaries and six sixes to win KKR the match by the 16th over.

2) KL Rahul – 14 balls vs Delhi Capitals, Mohali (2018)

KL Rahul has been in some form over the last few years in the IPL, carving a niche for himself as one of the best ball strikers in the competition. In April 2018, while playing for Punjab Kings, Rahul scorched a 14-ball half-century against Delhi Capitals, which remains the fastest half-century in the history of the IPL. It might come as a surprise that Rahul holds the record for the IPL fastest 50 as he often seems a more classical batsman rather than one of a marauder like Chris Gayle. However, on this day, Rahul was unstoppable. Chasing Delhi’s middling target of 167, Rahul started on fifth gear and never got his foot off the pedal. In all, Rahul hit six fours, and four sixes in his knock as Mohali was treated to one of the most special knocks ever seen.

3) Yusuf Pathan – 15 balls vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata (2014)

Yusuf Pathan grabbed all the limelight in Rajasthan Royals’ win in the first season of the IPL as a fierce hitter of the ball. At the time, there were not many power hitters in India, and Yusuf, with his belligerent shot-making, soon became the talk of the town. Soon after, Kolkata Knight Riders picked him up in the auctions, and Yusuf continued with his merry ways there. In 2014 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he brought down the roof at Eden Gardens. Batting first, Hyderabad were restricted to 160/7 in their 20 overs.

However, the Eden surface was playing tricks, and Hyderabad had good bowlers in their ranks. None of that mattered to Yusuf. The belligerent right-hander took the SRH bowlers to the cleaners smashing a half-century of a mere 15 balls, the then fastest fifty in IPL history. Not one SRH bowler was spared as Yusuf finished with 72 off just 22 balls, his innings studded with five fours and seven maximums. It was hitting of the highest order and KKR managed to chase the target of 161 in just 14.2 overs.

4) Sunil Narine – 15 balls vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, Bengaluru (2017)

Sunil Narine is not often known for his long hits. Of course, he can smack a long ball, but that generally happens at the end of the innings and not for long. However, Kolkata Knight Riders took a chance with Narine during the 2017 season and sent him up to open the batting. Against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Match 46 of Ipl 2017, Narine displayed brute hitting of the highest order. KKR were chasing a relatively small target of 159.

Narine made even light work of the chase as he creamed a half-century off 15 balls smashing the RCB to all quarters. This ranks third in the list of IPL fastest 50. He eventually finished on 54 off 17 balls, his innings consisting of 6 fours and 4 sixes. Such was his power-hitting that even Chris Lynn was left to be just a spectator at the other end. Before realizing what hit them, RCB had already lost the match.

5) Suresh Raina – 16 balls vs Punjab Kings, Mumbai (2014)

Suresh Raina has been one of the best batsmen the IPL has ever seen. He was the highest run-scorer in the league for the longest time before Virat Kohli went past him. The backbone of Chennai Super Kings’ batting and usually seen as the drafter in the middle order. However, against Punjab Kings in 2014, Raina brought out a form that few had seen before. Batting first Punjab Kings, led by Virender Sehwag’s masterful 122, racked up 226/6.

A 227-run target had never been chased down in the IPL before but Raina came out with other ideas. He started middling the ball from the get-go and completed his half-century in just 16 balls, which is still one of the fastest fifties in the history of the IPL. Raina scored 87 off only 25 balls, his innings consisting of 12 fours and 6 sixes. If not for an unnecessary runout, it seemed Raina would have taken his side home. CSK lost the game by 24 runs. Raina’s innings is widely regarded as one of the finest the league has ever seen.

6) Ishan Kishan – 16 balls vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, Abu Dhabi (2021)

Ishan Kishan of Mumbai Indians made his name in the top five of this list with a solid performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2021. He raced to a fifty in just 16 balls, the fifth fastest 50 in IPL.

7) Chris Gayle – 17 balls vs Pune Warriors India, Bengaluru (2013)

Several batsmen have scored a half-century in 17 balls in the IPL – 8, to be exact. However, we have picked Chris Gayle’s half-century as the best of the 9 just for the sheer buzz it generated. In IPL 2013, Gayle was at his absolute beast mode. On this particular day against Pune Warriors India, he took it to another level. Batting first, Gayle caught the Pune attack by the scruff of their neck, smashing them to all corners of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. He brought up his half-century off 17 balls, but he was not done. Eventually, he slammed the fastest T20 century, a record that stands to date and finished with 175*, a T20 record for the highest score in the format. He smashed 13 fours and 17 sixes during the course of the knock.

Other batsmen who have scored a fifty off 17 balls include Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard (twice), Adam Gilchrist, Chris Morris, Nicholas Pooran, Ishan Kishan, Sunil Narine.

Who do you think can break Rahul’s record of the fastest fifty in the Indian Premier League?
