Who is Umran Malik?

Malik is an Indian cricketer who is currently one of the fastest bowlers in the world of cricket. Arguably, he is the fastest bowler in international cricket currently for India. Umran Malik who was born on November 22, 1999, was raised in a Gujjar Nagar area in Jammu. He made his T20 debut in January 2021 while his List A debut happened in the same year in February.

Thanks to his knack to ball extremely fast, it didn’t take long for Umran Malik to make it to the Indian team after impressing the selectors in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has so far played 8 ODIs and 8 T20Is for India picking up 13 and 11 wickets in the two formats respectively. How did things start for Umran Malik?

Umran Malik turned the heads in the second leg of the IPL 2021 season when he was named a short-term replacement for T Natarajan who tested positive for COVID-19. He was with the Sunrisers Hyderabad as the net bowler since the 2020 season and his name was doing the rounds then only for bowling fast. However, the world witnessed it first-hand when he played his first IPL game in the 2021 season.

He delivered the second fastest delivery of IPL 2021 – 152.95 kph and it didn’t take much time for the concerned people to turn their heads. The man was soon picked as a net bowler of the Indian team for the T20 World Cup in the UAE. Umran Malik is the son of fruit seller Abdul Rashid who supported the youngster right from the word go. In an interview, Abdul Rashid revealed that he never refused his son to buy any equipment related to cricket. However, due to a lack of exposure, Umran Malik got a chance to shine beyond gully cricket only around the age of 17.

Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan also deserves a lot of accolades for the emergence of Umran Malik. He was the mentor of the fast bowler when he was with Jammu & Kashmir as a player-coach. Irfan played a major hand in Umran’s development and the former received a lot of praise when the latter was picked up in the Indian team for the first time.

Coming back to his stunning IPL 2021 debut, Umran just went another level in terms of his pace and performance in IPL 2022. He picked up a massive 22 wickets in 14 matches in IPL 2022 and at one stage, was in the race to win the Purple Cap as well in the tournament.

Following his stunning show in IPL 2022, Umran Malik soon made his international debut in June 2022 on an Ireland tour. In November 2022, the pace bowler got to play his first One-Day International game on the New Zealand tour. As he did in the IPL, even at the international level, Umran Malik stunned the batters with his extreme pace and consistency.

Umran Malik was in straight competition with Lockie Ferguson to deliver the fastest ball of IPL 2022 last year. The youngster kept on competing with the experience Kiwi speedster time and again before losing to the latter who broke the record in the final bowling 157.3 kph.

However, Umran Malik isn’t much behind in terms of his own record of the fastest delivery in the Indian Premier League (IPL). During the 50th game of IPL 2022 between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Umran Malik clocked a massive 157 kmph leaving the viewers and the commentators stunned. It was the fastest delivery by Umran Malik ever in his career. Interestingly, Umran Malik won the fastest delivery of the match award in all the 14 matches that SRH played in IPL 2022.

With his career just starting, many believe, the cricketer will easily go past Shoaib Akhtar’s fastest delivery record in international cricket.

Umran Malik stands third in the fastest balls ever bowled in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He delivered 157 kmph during the match between DC and SRH in IPL 2022 to make it to the third spot. However, the record for the fastest ball ever bowled in IPL is held by none other than Shaun Tait.

The Australian behemoth had clocked a massive 157.7 in one of the IPL matches during his playing career. Lockie Ferguson of New Zealand who featured for the eventual champions Gujarat Titans is in the second spot in this aspect.

He had delivered 157.3 kph delivery during the final of IPL 2022 that was played between Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals.

There is a lot of confusion around Umran Malik’s fastest ball in international cricket. It was recorded that he delivered 156 kph delivery in the first ODI of the three-match series against Sri Lanka in January 2023. However, there was an issue with the speedometer then and it isn’t recorded as his fastest delivery in international cricket.

However, even if it was a record, Umran would’ve bettered only his own record in this aspect. Umran Malik’s fastest delivery in international cricket is 155 kph. He delivered with such speed during the T20I series against Sri Lanka, also in January 2023.

It also turned out to be the fastest delivery ever bowled by an Indian in international cricket. He broke the record of Jasprit Bumrah who owned the record with a speed of 153.36 kph.

The second player in this list is pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah. He bowled at a speed of 153.36 kph during one of the matches at the international level.

Mohammed Shami and Navdeep Saini are the next in this list of fastest balls bowled by Indians in international cricket. Shami had clocked 153.3 kph during one of the matches for India while Saini’s fastest delivery was recorded at 152.85 kph.
