The dealer deals 5 cards to each player including himself. After the trump is determined, the dealer deals the remaining cards to the players in sets of 4 cards to 8 cards. The game is played in an anti-clockwise direction.

Rules For Selecting Trump

There are two ways to select the trump suit:

As per the first method, the game begins when the dealer deals 5 cards. The players play the game according to the Dehla Pakad game rules unless a player cannot follow suit. In this case, the trump suit is that suit played by the player who is unable to follow suit. After that, the dealer deals the remaining cards.

As per the second method, after the dealer deals the first 5 cards, the eldest hand makes the trump suit.

Rules For Hand Creation

The goal of the game is to make Kots as per the tips and tricks. The outcome of each hand is determined by how much of each team's four tens they used in their tricks.

How To Play Dehla Pakad Game?

Set-Up

The Dehla Pakad game is played with a standard deck of 52 cards between four players in a fixed partnership of two players. The partners sit opposite each other. The cards rank from high to low A-K-Q-J-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2.

Objective

The objective of each team in the game is to collect as many tens as possible and win Kots (Coat). Four tens equal 1 Kot for a team. The team with the majority of tens wins the hand. However, if no team can collect all the tens, they can win a Kot by winning seven consecutive hands.

Deal

The dealer is selected randomly, from the four players, for the first hand. The dealer in the subsequent hands is determined by the result of the previous hand. Once the dealer is determined, he shuffles the deck and deals the first five cards, face-down, to each of the four players (including himself).

The players then select a trump according to the Dehla Pakad rules. the dealer then deals the remaining cards to the players in batches of four such that each player has eight cards. The deal and play are always anti-clockwise.

Gameplay

The player seated to the right of the dealer leads the hand by playing any card. The other players follow suit if they can. If a player is unable to follow suit, they can play any other card, including the trump cards. The player who wins the trick is the one who plays the highest-ranking trump. If a trump is not played, then the player with the highest-ranking card of the lead suit wins the trick.

The winner of the trick then leads the next trick, and the game continues in the same way.

Trump Selection

As discussed in the trump selection rules, there are two common ways to select the trump suit.

First Method:

The dealer deals 5 cards and the gameplay starts as per the usual rules without the trumps. When a player is unable to follow suit, the suit played by that player who is unable to follow suit becomes the trump. After that trick ends, the dealer deals the remaining cards.

Second Method:

The dealer deals 5 cards and the player at the right of the dealer announces the trump based on their hand. After trump is declared, the dealer deals the remaining cards and the player who declares Trump leads the first trick.

Trick-Taking

Any player who takes a trick doesn't collect the cards from that trick. The cards are placed face-down in the middle of the table. However, if a player wins two consecutive tricks, they collect all the cards and add them to the team's pile.

Once a player collects the card from the centre pile, a new one is formed in the next trick. The game continues, and the player to win the 13th trick (final trick) collects the cards from the center pile.

Winnings Kots

The objective of the Dehla Pakad game is to win the majority of Kots, also called Coat. The players play either for a fixed number of hands, fixed length of time, or a target number of Kots.

A team wins 1 Kot if it takes all four 10s in a single hand. If the dealer and their partner win, the deal goes to the right. If the non-dealing team wins, the deal goes to the dealer's partner.

The non-dealing team wins the hand and the same dealer deals if it takes two or three 10s during play.

The dealing team wins the hand, and the deal moves to the right if they take three 10s.

A team wins 1 Kot if they take 7 hands in a row. However, the number of hands decreases to zero if a Kot is won by taking four 10s.
