Abhishek Sharma Biography and Career

Abhishek Sharma, a clean striker of the ball, who is known for his explosive batting style, is one of India's young talents. He is just 24 years old and has already made a name for himself with his aggressive play and has now become a household name. Born on September 4, 2000, in Amritsar, Punjab, Abhishek is a dynamic left-handed opening batter and left-arm spinner who has emerged as one of India’s most promising all-rounders.

Abhishek's aggressive stroke play, particularly against fast bowling, and his ability to read spin make him a versatile batter, especially in the T20 format. His journey as a cricketer began as a middle-order batter in age-group cricket, which later transitioned to an opening batter, which truly unlocked his potential. His early domestic success, including 1,200 runs in the 2015-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy, set the stage for him. In his maiden Under-16 match in the domestic cricket tournament, Abhishek scored a century. He made his Under-19 debut for Punjab in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy in 2016.

His gameplay and remarkable performances led him to play in India's Under-19 World Cup in 2018, in which India won. In the tournament, he scored 485 runs, including two centuries and three fifties, at a strike rate exceeding 180. His performance eventually earned him the opportunity to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was bought by the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for Rs 55 lakh. On his debut in IPL, he scored an unbeaten 46 runs off 19 balls.

After the 2018 Under-19 World Cup triumph, he struggled for consistency in the IPL but used the domestic circuit to hone his game. In the 2023-24 season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he led Punjab to their maiden win. He finished as the second-highest run scorer of the tournament with 485 runs from 10 innings at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 192.46, including two centuries and three half-centuries.

Abhishek also holds the record of hitting the fastest hundred in List A cricket. On February 18, 2021, he scored the fastest hundred by an Indian in just 42 balls against Madhya Pradesh.

Not just in domestic cricket, Abhishek has also made records in IPL and in international cricket at such a young age.

While he played just three games in his debut IPL season, his peak in his IPL career came in the 2022 season. In 2019, he was traded to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and since then, he has been associated with the same franchise.

His first three seasons with the Hyderabad franchise were average, but in the 2022 IPL season, his true performance emerged and showed what he is capable of doing.

In the 2022 IPL season, he played 14 matches and scored 426 runs, including two half-centuries, 75 being his best performance. In the 2024 season, he scored the fastest fifty for SRH against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad. He also finished the season with 484 runs in 16 matches and a strike rate of 204.22. After Travis Head, he was the second-highest run-scorer for the team. In that season, Abhishek also won the Most Sixes award for hitting the highest number of sixes (42) in the tournament.

In the 2025 IPL season, Abhishek Sharma registered his first century in the league, achieving it in just 40 balls during a match against Punjab Kings. He scored a brilliant 141 off 55 balls, which is the highest individual score by an Indian in the history of the league. The innings also marked the third-highest individual score of all time, the highest score by an SRH batter and the seventh-fastest century ever in the league.

Abhishek's aggressive stroke play and continued performance brought him the opportunity to play for the national team. He made his international debut in July 2024 against Zimbabwe, where he scored a duck in the first T20I, but made a brilliant comeback with a century (100 off 47 balls) in his second match, becoming the fastest player for India to score a century in T20Is in terms of innings.

Not just that, Abhishek became the highest individual scorer for India in T20Is when he made 135 runs off 54 balls against England in 2025. His innings included 13 sixes and 7 fours. He made the second-highest score against England and also the second-fastest half-century and century for India, in terms of balls.

Abhishek's aggressive gameplay, his confidence and such performances cemented his reputation as a big-match player.

Beyond Cricket

Off the field, he is known for his humility and companionship, often seen joking around with teammates like Shubman Gill, who is also his childhood friend. His Instagram posts, which mix cricketing achievements with family moments, reflect a grounded yet ambitious individual. Fans appreciate his celebratory gestures, such as the folded notes tribute to SRH fans, which received widespread praise on X.

Family is the focus of his life; he lives in a luxurious bungalow in Amritsar with his parents, Raj Kumar and Manju Sharma, and sisters Komal and Sonia. Abhishek is also a dog lover and had a pet named "Leo", who recently passed away. He mourned the loss of his pet dog, expressing his grief on social media. He shared a heartfelt message and photos, acknowledging Leo's significance in his life.
