Standing six feet four inches tall, Ishant Sharma is one of India's most enduring fast bowlers. He is known for his ability to bowl at speeds over 150 km/h and for generating bounce, which has made him a formidable presence in international cricket.
Ishant's cricketing journey started at the age of 14, and by 18, he had debuted in domestic cricket with Delhi's Ranji Trophy team. Not just in domestic, at 18, he was called to join the Indian squad for the tour of South Africa in 2006–07. However, after receiving the call and organising travel arrangements, he was deselected.
Ishant's international debut wasn't that far from him as he was selected for the Test team for the Bangladesh tour in May 2007 and played as a replacement for the fast bowler Munaf Patel. Although his Test debut was just fine for him, Sharma was called to play in the third Test during Pakistan's tour of India in December 2007 due to the injury of India's frontline pacers Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, and Sreesanth. In that game, Sharma picked up 5 wickets and this performance earned him a place in India's squad for the tour of Australia, which is where he amazed everyone with his excellent bowling.
The 2007-08 Australia tour was his breakout moment as his fiery spell to Ricky Ponting in Perth, consistently hitting over 140 km/h and inducing an edge - announced his arrival.
Ishant's bowling has been impressive against Australia, whether in Test matches or One Day Internationals (ODIs). During the ODI CB Series, he made it difficult for Australian players to score off his deliveries. India won that series, and he was the team's highest wicket-taker.
During the 2008 Test series against Australia in India, Ishant was the leading wicket-taker with 16 wickets and was named Player of the Series as India won 2–0. He thus became the first Indian fast bowler to win such an award in a Test series on Indian soil, the first being Kapil Dev, who won the award in 1983. He was known for achieving reverse swing off short balls and along with senior opening bowler Zaheer Khan, troubled the Australian players.
Over the next two seasons, Inshant's performance declined as he lost his pace. Without it, his short-of-a-good-length deliveries lost their effectiveness. In March 2012, he underwent surgery on his ankle, which had been troubling him for over a year. After the surgery, he played in the ODI series against Australia, where he gave away 30 runs in an over, equalling the most expensive over by an Indian bowler, joining Yuvraj Singh, who also conceded 30 runs in an ODI game against England in 2007.
However, he bounced back surprisingly well. In his last 35 Tests, he averaged 23.4. He had a great performance with 9 wickets vs. New Zealand (Auckland, 2014) and secured his career-best figures of 7/74 at the Lord's in 2014, with an aggressive spell in England's second innings, bowling India to a 95-run win.
Ishant had to miss the 2015 ODI World Cup because of a knee injury, and his white-ball career ended in Australia the next year. But he made a strong comeback in Test cricket.
In August 2018, in the fourth Test against England, Sharma reached 250 Test wickets. Then, in the fifth Test, he took 3 wickets in England's first innings, matching Kapil Dev's record for the most wickets by an Indian bowler in England. He ended the series with 18 wickets, the second-highest in the team.
In India's following tour of Australia, he took 11 wickets in the first three Tests in Australia. India won two of those matches, securing their first-ever Test series win in Australia. In August 2019, Ishant took his 9th Test 5-wicket haul against the West Indies with figures of 5/43 in the first innings in the first Test match of India's tour of the West Indies.
When it comes to his Indian Premier League (IPL) journey, he started with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) from where he played for three seasons, then he joined Deccan Chargers (DC) and later Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). While all these teams won the IPL at least once in the first ten years, Ishant wasn’t part of the winning squads. From 2019, he settled into a longer run with Delhi Capitals (DC). For the 2025 IPL edition, Ishant was bought by the Gujarat Titans (GT) at his base price of Rs 75 lakh.
Ishant’s career shows his hard work and determination. In his early years (2007-2013), he was inconsistent, taking wickets at an average of around 37 in Test. Criticism followed, with fans and analysts questioning his wicket-taking ability. However, post-2018, Ishant reinvented himself, focusing on fitness and precision.
Off the field, Ishant Sharma leads a grounded life, balancing family and personal interests. Married to basketball player Pratima Singh since 2016, the couple often shares glimpses of their life on social media, endearing them to fans. The couple has one child, a baby girl, born in November 2023. Ishant loves music and is an avid traveller, often posting about his trips to serene places like the Maldives.
Apart from cricket, Ishant Sharma has been involved in several charitable activities, including visiting hospitals to interact with children and participating in campaigns promoting social causes such as supporting the armed forces. He has also expressed his admiration for frontline workers during the pandemic and has been recognised for his philanthropy.
Ishant’s net worth is estimated at around $15 million, which is approximately Rs 110 Crores. His income is mainly driven by the domestic and international cricket match fees and brand endorsements, which make him one of the most bankable cricketers. He has been associated with multiple brand endorsements over the years that have contributed to his annual income. Ishant has previously partnered with popular brands like CoinSwitch and Kuber. He was also appointed as the brand ambassador for the T10 Gully Cricket powered by Reasonable Communications.
