About
Introduction
Gujarat Titans are one of the two newest franchises to be part of the Indian Premier League (IPL). They came into the tournament in IPL 2022 and, right from the outset, showed their class by winning the tournament under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy in their debut season.
The governing council of the IPL had in 2021 issued a tender inviting two new sides into the IPL. A total of 22 companies showed interest in the offer, but in the end, it was CVC Capital Partners, with a whopping bid of Rs 5625 crore, who won the rights to operate the Ahmedabad-based franchise. Ahead of IPL 2022, the said franchise drafted in Hardik Pandya as captain and named the team Gujarat Titans.
With Ashish Nehra as head coach, and the likes of Shubman Gill, Mohammed Shami, Sai Sudarshan and Pandya in the setup, Titans punched way above their weight and ticked off one match after the other in their debut season. Eventually, they won the final in a classical game. In 2023, Titans once again showed their wares and qualified for the final, only to be beaten in a close game against Chennai Super Kings.
Gujarat Titans history
GT became the ninth team to venture into the IPL after their owners CVC Capital Partners made the highest bid ahead of IPL 2022. In the first season itself, GT became a force to reckon with. Captained by Pandya, many felt that they did not have a great squad at the IPL auction.
But they surprised one and all by topping the IPL 2022 points table with 10 wins in 14 games. The only matches they lost were against SRH, Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. In the first qualifier, they comfortably beat Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets and then again in the final by the same margin.
Then, in IPL 2023, GT once again topped the points table with 10 wins out of 14 matches. They lost the first qualifier but came back with a bang to win qualifier 2 by 62 runs against Mumbai Indians. In the final, they were well on course to beat CSK, but out of nowhere, Ravindra Jadeja smashed a six and four off the last two balls to take the trophy out of GT’s hands.
Ahead of IPL 2024, Pandya left GT to move to MI. GT appointed Shubman Gill as their new captain, and he could not get the desired results, with the team only managing only five wins in 14 matches and finishing eighth on the points table. GT will once again be led by Gill in IPL 2025.
Gujarat Titans Team Owners
GT was one of two franchises that was bid for ahead of IPL 2022. CVC Capitals Partners were the ones who bid successfully for them for a mammoth Rs 5625 crore. CVC Capital Partners is a French private equity and investment firm based out of Luxembourg. The firm is a leading investment company in the world and manages funds for over 500 top, blue-chip clients in the world.
However, in 2025, Torrent Group, an Indian business conglomerate with headquarters in Ahmedabad, bought a majority stake in GT in the tune of 67% from CVC Capital Partners.
GT Ex-Captains, Current Coaches, Home Ground

In IPL 2023, Rashid Khan also led the GT side for two matches as stand-in captain when Pandya was injured. GT play all their home matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium, in Ahmedabad.

GT’s IPL 2024 Glimpse
After the highs of 2022 and 2023, GT could not quite replicate their performances in IPL 2024. They got a bit of a jolt right ahead of the season when their captain Pandya, who had taken them to two finals, moved to Mumbai Indians in a surprising all-cash deal. That move shook up GT a bit, and they had to appoint a new captain. They went with youngster Shubman Gill, while the rest of the core squad remained intact.
GT began their season with a six-run win over Mumbai Indians but went down to CSK by 63 runs before delivering another win over SRH. However, back-to-back defeats against Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants hurt their campaign, and they could never really bounce back.
GT finished eighth on the ten-team points table with five wins, seven losses and two no-results in 14 games.
GT in the IPL (2022 to 2024)
GT have qualified for the playoffs two times in the three seasons that they have been a part of the IPL. Of this, they lifted the title in their debut season of 2023 and then qualified for the final in 2024.
