India’s sixth straight win came against England in Lucknow on Sunday. But if not for an 87 by captain and opener Rohit Sharma, the hosts might have found themselves in trouble. Five of the XI scored in single digits, including Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. Sharma’s half century, 39 from KL Rahul and 49 from Suryakumar Yadav propelled India to 229 on a slow Lucknow pitch. The bowlers then wreaked havoc – Mohammad Shami (4 wickets) and Jasprit Bumrah (3 wickets) helped bowl out England for only 129 in 34.5 overs. India’s bowling has looked very strong throughout the tournament.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, come into this match on the back of a seven-wicket loss to Afghanistan. Batting first, Sri Lanka posted 241 runs on the board with contributions from Sadeera Samarawickrama (86), Pathum Nissanka (46) and Kusal Mendis (39). However, they were unable to defend the target as Afghanistan got over the line with seven wickets and 28 balls remaining.
For Sri Lanka to still stay in contention for the semi-finals, winning all their remaining games is a must.
