Cricket World Cup 2023: NED vs SL Fantasy Preview and MPL Top Picks

Match: Netherlands vs Sri Lanka, Cricket World Cup 2023 (NED vs SL)

Date: October 21, Saturday, 10.30 AM IST

Venue: Ekana Stadium, Lucknow

The Netherlands and Sri Lanka will play the 19th game of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on October 21 at Lucknow’s Ekana Cricket Stadium.

Netherlands’ historic win over South Africa has moved them up to the eighth position in the points table. An unbeaten 78 from Scott Edwards, along with other small but significant contributions from the lower middle order, propelled the Netherlands to a first innings total of 245. Although they were bowled out in 43 overs, they managed to put up a decent total on the board. Their bowlers, then, did a brilliant job to defend the target against South Africa’s famed batting line-up. Logan van Beek (3) Paul van Meekeren (2), Roelof van der Merwe (2), Bas de Leede (2) and Colin Ackermann (1) bowled out South Africa for 207 in 42.5 overs. This was the first win for the Netherlands at the World Cup since 2007, and third overall.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are right at the bottom of the points table, having lost all their three matches. Another loss, and their chances to make the semifinals could come to an end. Champions of the 1996 edition of the World Cup, Sri Lanka have so far lost to South Africa, Pakistan and Australia. In their most recent game against Australia, Sri Lanka openers Pathum Nissanka (61) and Kusal Perera (68) stitched together a first-wicket partnership of 125 runs, but the rest of the batsmen could merely score 57 runs together. Dilshan Madushanka picked up three wickets, but that wasn’t enough to defend 209.

Five players to watch out for

Here we list five players you must pick in your MPL fantasy XI for NED vs SL, Cricket World Cup 2023

Dilshan Madushanka – bowler, Sri Lanka

The Netherlands batsmen have struggled more against spinners as compared to the pacers. Dilshan Madushanka picked up three wickets in the previous game, before which he took two wickets each against Pakistan and South Africa. If he’s able to pick up a few big wickets in this game as well, Sri Lanka may finally win their first game of the tournament. The 23-year-old has had an excellent start to his ODI career, picking 17 wickets in nine games since debuting in January this year.

Kusal Mendis – wicketkeeper batsman, Sri Lanka

Kusal Mendis is the top run-scorer for Sri Lanka in the tournament thus far. He has scored 207 runs in three innings at an average of 69 and an impressive strike rate of over 156. He scored just nine runs against Australia in the previous game, but before that, Mendis scored 76 and 122 against South Africa and Pakistan respectively. He brings with him plenty of experience, having played 115 ODIs, scoring 3422 runs at an average of 33.22.

Bas de Leede – all-rounder, Netherlands

Bas de Leede will play a crucial role in deciding how far the Netherlands can go in the tournament. With the bat, he has scored 68, 18 and two runs respectively from the last three innings. With the ball, he has taken seven wickets in three games.

Scott Edwards – wicketkeeper batsman, Netherlands

Scott Edwards was named the Player of the match in Netherlands’ victory over South Africa. Edwards top-scored with an unbeaten 78, which was laced with 10 boundaries and a maximum. He also took three catches. Edwards has played 41 ODIs for the Netherlands, scoring 1320 runs at an average of 41.25.

Pathum Nissanka – batsman, Sri Lanka

Pathum Nissanka has scored a half century in the two matches he has played. He scored 51 against Pakistan and 61 against Australia, and will now be looking for a third straight fifty. Nissanka has played 43 ODIs for Sri Lanka, averaging 37.70.
