Introduction
One of the most popular franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL),the Mumbai Indians (MI) have made their mark as the joint-most successful franchise in the history of the tournament. MI have been part of the IPL since the first season in 2008, and have been a giant from that first year.
MI are the joint-most successful franchise in the IPL and have won the title five times, the same as CSK. MI was founded in the year 2008 and is owned by India’s biggest conglomerate, Reliance Industries. They play all of their matches at the iconic Wankhede Stadium and are one of the most lucrative franchises in the IPL.
MI won the IPL for the first time in 2013, but before that, they had won the Champions League T20 in 2011. It took them five years to win their maiden IPL title, but once they got that first whiff of victory, they did not stop. MI added four more titles: in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. They won all of their IPL titles under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, who is the most successful player in the tournament in terms of trophies won. He has six IPL titles to his name, including one with Deccan Chargers.
MI are currently captained by Hardik Pandya, who took over the reins from Rohit in 2024. The shift came under acrimonious circumstances, with Rohit fans particularly unhappy. Pandya was booed across venues in 2024, but it is expected that he will be received much more warmly come IPL 2025.
Mumbai Indians history
When the BCCI announced the launch of the IPL in 2008, Mumbai became one of the first teams in the inaugural season. The Wankhede stadium became their den, and Sachin Tendulkar was named the team’s captain and icon player, who would earn 15% more than the next best-paid player in the team.
The Mumbai franchise was sold to Reliance Industries Ltd for a whopping $111.9 million, making it the most expensive team in the competition.
MI struggled in their initial few games of IPL 2008, losing their first four matches despite having the likes of Sanath Jayasuriya, Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock, Lasith Malinga and Robin Uthappa in the mix. In addition, their stand-in captain Harbhajan was also suspended after allegedly slapping S Sreesanth after a game.
After the initial jitters, MI made a strong core post the 2010 season. They signed up Kieron Pollard and also brought in Rohit from Deccan Chargers. In 2013, Ricky Ponting was removed from captaincy midway through the tournament and thus started the reign of Rohit Sharma.
Under his captaincy, MI won their first trophy after defeating CSK in the IPL 2013 final by 23 runs. Then, they qualified for the playoffs in the 2014 season but failed to make it to the final. In IPL 2015, MI finished second on the points table. They beat CSK in qualifier 1 and then again in the final to win their second trophy.
IPL 2016 wasn’t as great for MI as they finished fifth on the points table and failed to qualify for the playoffs. But they roared back in 2017, defeating Rising Pune Supergiants in a heart-stopping final in Hyderabad by one run. In 2019, MI once again topped the table and became the first team to win four IPL titles when they beat CSK in a last-ball thriller. In 2020, they soared ahead, adding another IPL trophy to their already glittering cabinet.
MI haven’t been as consistent since that title win and were particularly poor in IPL 2024, where they finished bottom of the ten-team table with just four wins in 14 matches.
Mumbai Indians Team Owners
When the IPL was launched back in 2008, RIL wasted no time in sending their bids, and they got hold of the Mumbai franchise for a record sum. The sports division of RIL, which goes by Indiawin Sports Private Limited and is the subsidiary of Reliance Industries, was formed in 2007 and holds multiple franchises in various leagues around the world. The official owner of the Mumbai Indians is Indiawin Sports Private Limited. While Mukesh Ambani is the sole owner of MI, Nita Ambani, his wife, is the director at Reliance Industries. Their son Akash Ambani has also taken up a big role in recent years and can often be seen in matches at the stadiums.
Apart from the IPL, MI also hold stakes in a number of franchises around the world. They have a team in the WPL going by the same name and also in the SA20, with the name MI Cape Town. MI have a team in USA’s Major League Cricket - MI New York and also a team in UAE’s ILT20, which goes by MI Emirates.
MI Ex-Captains, Current Coaches, Home Ground
MI have had a number of captains leading the franchise. But their longest-serving captain and inarguably the most popular one is Rohit Sharma, who led the team between 2013 and 2023 and quite successfully. He has captained MI in 163 matches and has a win percentage of 55.82.
On the coaching front, Mahela Jayawardene is the head coach of MI, while Lasith Malinga is the bowling coach. Kieron Pollard is the batting coach, while J Arunkumar is the assistant batting coach.

MI Captains (2008 to 2025)
When MI first became a part of the IPL, Sachin Tendulkar was named captain, but Harbhajan Singh captained the team for four games after Tendulkar was injured. Shaun Pollock then took over the reins midway through the season before Tendulkar returned. In IPL 2013, Ricky Ponting took over captaincy, but he led the team for only six games before retiring. That saw the dawn of Rohit Sharma, who led the team for ten seasons. MI saw their golden period under Rohit’s captaincy. They won the IPL title five times but Rohit was removed under acrimonious circumstances in 2023. In IPL 2024, Hardik Pandya took over and he will continue leading the team in the upcoming season.

MI’s IPL 2024 Glimpse
MI did not have the best of times at the IPL 2024, where they finished at the bottom of the points table. It was an extremely difficult time for the franchise after Rohit Sharma was removed from captaincy and Hardik Pandya was brought on board. There were reports that the players were not happy with the change, and the fans also made their displeasure known. Pandya was booed at every stadium he went to, including at his home ground of Wankhede Stadium.
As a result, MI only won four games out of 14 and lost ten.
MI in the IPL (2008 to 2024)
MI have qualified for the playoffs ten times in 17 seasons. Of these, they have been finalists six times and have lifted the trophy a record five times.
