Indian Premier League 2025 Team List:

Mumbai:

The five-time champions and one of the most successful teams in the tournament, Team Mumbai has been a force to reckon with since the start of the league. They have won the league in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Rohit Sharma has been the captain of Mumbai each time they have been crowned champions, however, for the 2025 season, the franchise has named Hardik Pandya as their new captain. Pandya took over captaincy from Rohit at the start of 2024 after being traded in from Gujarat Titans. While Mumbai did not have the greatest of times last year, they will hope for better results this season.

Chennai:

Chennai is the joint-most successful team in the T20 league if we look at the trophies alone. But in terms of legacy and cultivating a winning habit, Chennai has been miles ahead. They have won the Indian T20 league five times, with their fifth trophy coming in 2023. With MS Dhoni leading the way, Chennai had qualified for the playoffs every season they were a part of up until 2020 (Chennai was banned for two years in 2016 & 2017). Dhoni relinquished captaincy last season and in came young blood Ruturaj Gaikwad to lead the franchise.

Kolkata:

Kolkata is third in terms of being the most successful franchise in the Indian T20 Premier League and are the current defending champions. They have won the coveted title three times - in 2012, 2014 and 2024 - twice under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, and once with Shreyas Iyer leading the way. Kolkata were the runners-up in 2021 before the franchise brought in Shreyas Iyer at the helm. He changed their winning mentality and Kolkata ended 2025 with their third title. Iyer has since moved to Punjab and Kolkata will go into the 2025 season with a new captain.

Hyderabad:

The team from Hyderabad came into existence only in 2012 but quickly found its bearings in the tournament. They won the Indian T20 Premier League in 2016, with David Warner as captain. However, the team has undergone various changes with Warner and Kane Williamson, two of their most successful batsmen, now out of the side. Australia's Pat Cummins led the team in 2024 and Hyderabad qualified for the final. Their aggressive brand of cricket was praised by one and all. Cummins will once again lead Hyderabad in 2025.

Rajasthan:

The team from Rajasthan have been the perennial underdogs since the start of the Indian T20 League. They won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008 but did not once make it to the final until 2022. They will be led by Sanju Samson once again in 2025 as they look to repeat their performance. In 2025, Rajasthan have also brought in a number of solid T20 specialists.

Bangalore

With the kind of firepower Bangalore have had over the years, it is indeed a surprise that they do not have a single Indian T20 trophy to their name yet. In all these years, Bangalore have always looked like a side that will certainly lift the title. But they haven't. Virat Kohli stepped down from the captaincy role with RCB announcing Faf du Plessis as their new skipper after 2021. Du Plessis led the team till the end of the 2024 season but was not retained for 2025. Rajat Patidar was named the Bangalore captain and he will lead the side in the upcoming season.

Delhi:

The Delhi team has never really lived up to their potential. They have had some of the biggest names in world cricket but never won the title. In what was a huge boost for them, they were re-joined by Rishabh Pant in the 2024 season after he missed the 2023 season due to injuries he sustained in a car crash. However, Delhi weren't able to put their best foot forward. In 2025, Delhi did not retain Pant and will be going for a new captain.

Punjab:

Team Punjab is one of the weakest teams in the competition. They have shown promise repeatedly but have usually been short-lived. The team has finished in the bottom half of the points table every season, barring 2008 and 2014 and is usually considered the weakest of all sides. They have had innumerable captaincy changes and ownership issues. But in the 2025 auction, Punjab have come up with a solid team. Iyer has been named captain and he knows what it is like to win trophies. Can he turn around Punjab's fortunes?

Gujarat

The 2022 winners, and runners-up in the 2023, Gujarat will look to win their second title come 2025. One of the two newest teams in the competition, Gujarat once again have a strong core at their disposal. Hardik Pandya has moved back to the Mumbai Indians, and the team will now be led by Shubman Gill. He was announced captain last season and will continue to take the team forward.

Lucknow

Lucknow, owned by RPSG Ventures, had a promising opening season in IPL 2022 where they reached the playoffs. KL Rahul's captaincy was an influencing factor for their first-ever season. Lucknow reached the playoffs in IPL 2023 too, but things did not go as planned in 2024. Rahul had an acrimonious exit and Lucknow will now be led by Pant for the 2025 season.

Schedule For IPL Fantasy Matches

Last year's winners Kolkata will take on Bengaluru in the opening game of the tournament this time around in Kolkata. A total of 74 matches will be played this season, which includes two Qualifiers, one Eliminator and the final which will be played in Kolkata again.

Tips & Tricks to play Indian T20 Fantasy Cricket

Building a fantasy team is like any other task you take up in life. It requires meticulous planning, research, and time. Each player has his own set of skills, and you need to be mindful of the same. Here are a few tips and tricks to play the Indian T20 fantasy league on MPL.

  • Make the team pertaining to the Indian fantasy league: A lot of the players like Kagiso Rabada, Liam Livingtone and Phil Salt might be lethal in their home country, but it becomes a different ball game in India. Always pick a player in your fantasy side that is expected to come good in Indian conditions. Check the performance of each player, even the domestic ones. You never know who can come good on a given day in the cricket T20 league.
  • Be mindful of the conditions: The conditions also play a massive role in deciding how a player will perform on a given day. If the overhead conditions are cloudy and it is a cold, wet day, always go for pacers in your team. In case of a hot and humid day, the pitch is likely to flatten out, and that will mean runs in abundance for batsmen. The venue where the match is being played should also be taken into account when setting up your fantasy team.
  • Research the uncapped players: Sometimes, the unknown entities are the ones that make the biggest statements. Whenever you select players, always keep one or two uncapped players in your fantasy XI as you never know who can turn out to be a trump card on the given day and turn the game on its head.
  • Choose your captain and vice captain wisely: You should be very careful while choosing the captain and vice captain as they give you 2x and 1.5 x the points, respectively. Your captain and vice captain more often than not define the outcome of your fantasy cricket team. Choose players who are likely to give you points in more than one facet of the game, such as an all rounder or wicket keeper.
