Introduction

The IPL 2016 champions, Sunrisers Hyderabad, is one team that can never be underestimated. Once led by David Warner and currently captained by Pat Cummins, SRH have always punched above their weight. In IPL 2024, they absolutely changed the way batting was done, going for their big hits from word go and absolutely pummeling attacks that came their way.

SRH are a professional cricket franchise which is based out of Telangana in Hyderabad. The team is owned by the SUN Group and was founded in 2012 after the Deccan Chargers were terminated in 2011. They first played in the IPL in 2013 and won the championship in 2016 under Warner's captaincy. They qualified for the final in 2018 and 2024 and have qualified for the playoffs seven times in 12 seasons.

SRH do not have many big names, but they make sure each player is backed to the hilt. They finished in third place in 2020 and then had a bit of a lull phase. They finished last in 2021, eighth in 2022 and right at the bottom in 2023. However, there was a major shift in 2024, where they changed the style of batmanship and broke records every step of the way. They qualified for the final, where they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in the final

SRH play all of their home matches at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal.

Sunrisers Hyderabad History

SRH made their maiden appearance in IPL 2013. They replaced Deccan Chargers in the IPL, who were terminated in 2012. The franchise was taken over by SUN TV Network, who won the bid for US$ 9.8 million per year for a five-year deal. The team franchise jersey was unveiled in March 2013 and the team song was released later that month.

SRH retained 20 of the players from the Deccan Chargers squad and played their first game in IPL 2013 against Pune Warriors India, which they won in what was a low-scoring encounter. Kumar Sangakkara captained SRH in the first eight matches of IPL 2013 before Cameron White took over.

The year 2014 wasn't great for SRH. They finished sixth that season and sixth again in IPL 2015. But their fortunes took an upswing in 2016 when they won the IPL under Warner's captaincy. It was a tournament where SRH were not always the dominant team, but made sure they kept at it.

In the league stage, SRH finished third with eight wins and six losses in 14 games. They had a stellar bowling lineup and defended totals amazingly well. In the eliminator, they defeated KKR by 22 runs and in Qualifier 2, they beat the now-defunct Gujarat Lions by four wickets.

In the final, SRH came up against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Batting first, they scored 208 for 7, thanks to Ben Cutting's late blitz. RCB started strongly, but a middle-order collapse saw them falling short by eight runs. While SRH have qualified for the final two more times, 2016 remains the only time that they won the title.

SRH Team Owners

SRH are owned by the SUN TV Network Limited, which is headquartered in Chennai and is one of India's biggest television networks, with 32 channels and 45 FM radio stations. They are owned by Kalanithi Maran while his daughter Kavya Maran is the chief executive and is often spotted at venues whenever the teams travel. Apart from the IPL, the Sun Group also has stakes in the SA20. Their team Sunrisers Eastern Cape was crowned champions in 2023 and 2024. In 2025, Eastern Cape reached the final again but were beaten by MI Cape Town by 76 runs.

SRH Ex-Captains, Current Coaches, Home Ground

SRH have had a number of captains leading the franchise. Their longest-serving captain is David Warner, who also led them to a title win in 2016. Pat Cummins was formally announced captain ahead of IPL 2024 and he took SRH into the final for the third time. Kane Williamson has also led SRH but with limited success. SRH's head coach is former New Zealand all-rounder Daniel Vettoru, while Muttiah Muralitharan is the spin-bowling coach.

SRH Captains (2008 to 2025)

When SRH first became a part of the IPL, Kumar Sangakkara was named captain for the first eight games. Cameron White then took over the reins midway through the season and also captained them in the playoffs. In IPL 2014, Shikhar Dhawan took over captaincy but he led the team only for one season. SRH saw their golden period under Warner's captaincy. They won the IPL title and also qualified for the final in 2018. But Warner was removed under acrimonious circumstances. SRH also had Williamson leading the team up until 2022 before Cummins took over in IPL 2024. He will continue leading the side in IPL 2025.

SRH's IPL 2024 Glimpse

After an uncertain time in IPL 2023, where SRH finished at the bottom of the ten-team table, the team underwent an overhaul. They were adamant about playing fearless cricket, and under Pat Cummins, who himself was coming into the tournament after leading Australia to the ODI World Cup title, SRH unleashed a brand of cricket never seen before. They broke T20 records like they were nothing. The opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head had one mission, and that was to hit every ball they faced for a six. In the 2024 season alone, SRH smashed the 250-run barrier three times. Against RCB, they amassed 287 for 3, which remains the record for the highest score in the history of not just IPL but T20 cricket.

SRH qualified for the playoffs as the second-best team after KKR. They lost to them in Qualifier 1 but then won Qualifer 2 handsomely. But, in the final, SRH fell short by a huge margin and KKR took home the trophy.

SRH in the IPL (2008 to 2024)

SRH have qualified for the playoffs seven times in 12 seasons. Of these, they won the IPL once in 2016 and qualified for the final two times.
