Suryakumar Yadav should have been a part of India’s tour of Australia: Brian Lara

Team India’s much-awaited series against Australia is all set to commence in a few days from now. The tour would comprise 3 ODIs, as many T20Is, and finally, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy comprising a 4-match Test series. The hype surrounding the tour has been on a rise from the time the squads were announced for the Men in Blue in all three formats. One of the names that missed out on the limited-overs contests was Suryakumar Yadav, who has been heavily scoring runs in both domestic cricket and IPL but is yet to make his international debut.

Speaking on the same, former West Indies cricketer turned expert, Brian Lara, lauded the 30-year-old Suryakumar’s technique and the performances he has delivered in clutch situations for the Mumbai Indians. He feels that the Mumbai-born cricketer could succeed at international cricket.

“Yeah, definitely. He is a class player. I don’t just look at players that score runs, I look at their technique, capabilities under pressure, positions that they are batting, and for me, Suryakumar Yadav has done such a wonderful job for Mumbai,” said Lara on the Star Sports show – Cricket Connected.

Suryakumar Yadav has been the best player for Mumbai Indians: Brian Lara

Suryakumar Yadav has been one of the most consistent run-getter for MI since his arrival into the squad in IPL 2018. The Mumbaikar scored over 512 and 424 runs while averaging over 30 and maintaining a striking rate of 130-plus in 2018 and 2019 respectively. He was among the highest run-getters in the previous edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with close to 400 runs, averaging 56.00, a strike rate of over 160, and 4 fifty-plus totals to his name.

He carried his form into this year’s IPL which took place in UAE, as he amassed 480 runs in 16 innings at an average of 40.00 and a strike rate of 145.02. Not to forget, he registered four half-centuries on the way.

“He comes to bat on the back of Rohit Sharma, and Quinton de Kock and every time, they are under pressure, he comes in at No 3. Just remember, your No 3 batsman, other than the openers, the No 3 batsman in any cricket team is normally your best player, your most reliable player.

“And for me, he has been that for Mumbai Indians and I see no reason why, looking at the squad, he can be a part of it,” added the former cricketer.

Team India will play the first ODI on November 27 at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney.
