Rishabh Pant – India’s next superstar

IPL Fantasy Stats Rishabh Pant

A fiery batsman, a chirpy wicket-keeper, and now the captain of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League – Rishabh Pant is all of 23 years old but is already a superstar across all formats of the game. Pant shot into the limelight after his exploits in the U19 World Cup in 2016 where he blitzed a 24-ball 75 against Nepal and a power-packed century versus Namibia.

During the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy season, Pant smashed 308 runs in an innings against Maharashtra becoming the third-youngest Indian to score a triple ton in a first-class match. In the same season, Pant smoked a 48-ball ton against Jharkhand, the fastest century in the history of the Ranji Trophy. If that wasn’t enough, in his second season Pant smashed the second-fastest T20 century of all-time against Himachal Pradesh in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match.

Pant was picked by the Delhi franchise during the IPL auctions in February 2016 for a whopping INR 1.9 crore from a base price of INR 10 lakh. Playing in only his third match, he smashed 69 off 40 balls to see Delhi through to an eight-wicket win. In the 2017 season of IPL, Pant massacred Gujarat Lions en route a 43-ball 97, which was regarded by Sachin Tendulkar as the best knock he has seen in all of IPL. Pant then slammed his maiden IPL century in IPL 2018 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, a 63-ball 128, which was at the time the highest score in the league by an Indian. He was named captain of the Delhi side ahead of IPL 2021.

The dasher from Delhi was first called into the national side in January 2017 for the T20 Internationals against England. It wasn’t easy for Pant though. When he first came into the Indian side, Pant was filing MS Dhoni‘s boots, which was a huge task in itself. Any lapse in his wicket keeping drew harsh criticism from fans and comparisons with MS Dhoni have always been there. Pant did not have the best of times at the start of his career. He often got out after securing a start and there were far too many lapses in his keeping. However, in the last year or so Pant has really come of age.

Pant is the only Indian wicketkeeper to score Test centuries in England and Australia and is currently the seventh-ranked batsman in Test cricket. Pant’s fearless batting came to the fore during India’s recent win over Australia where he scored runs for fun. He does not have a lot of captaincy experience but if there is one thing we know about him, he will not be shy in taking any risks during the IPL.
